Australia Week at Footsteps Chalfont St Peter
G’day Readers, Come and kangaroo jump on over and join us as we explore “Down Under”.
Our topic for the last week of January is Australia to tie in with Australia Day on Tuesday 26th Jan. The week may have started with fun in the snow but we used our imaginations to whisk us off to the Australian sunshine. We have looked at the different native animals, culture, geography and musical instruments, as well as some of their food.
Our incredible team cooked up lots of different activities for the children to learn from with a host of themes and experiences. From sensory boards with beaches and surfers through to a small world Australian Zoo with Aie to take a tour of what sorts of animals might live there. The children loved role playing being zoo keepers!
We have had a week full of creativity! We made Australian animal pictures using corks and stamps, and pictures of the Sydney Opera house where we had lots of fun sticking and painting. We’ve made colourful boomerangs using paint dabbers and felt pens, and we learnt that when you throw a boomerang it comes back. On Australia Day we painted the Australian flag and talked about how it was similar and different to ours. The children did very well at putting the colours in the right spots and painting around the stars. We loved learning all about some of Australia’s cuddlier residents too. We made koalas using our painted hand prints in trees and the 2-3’s made Koala’s with Maria out of paper plates.
We enjoyed listening to some traditional Australian music and we made all different kinds of sounds with our musical instruments. We improvised with some long cardboard tubes to make the sound of the didgeridoo.
One of our favourite activities was making Fairy Bread, an Australian snack, for one of our snacks. It is made with bread and butter and sprinkles. The children loved it, but we did discuss how it wouldn’t be healthy to eat it all the time.
We can’t wait to see where our imaginary adventures around the world will take us next!
