Celebrating, Exploring and Learning Together at Footsteps

At Footsteps, we love to fill our calendar with meaningful celebrations, exciting national events and fun themed days. These moments give children the opportunity to explore new cultures, develop curiosity, discover new interests and build connections with the world around them.

Welcoming the Year with Chinese New Year

Earlier this term, our children enjoyed learning about Chinese New Year, a wonderful celebration that introduces them to different traditions, foods, colours and stories from around the world.

The settings were filled with bright reds and golds as the children explored crafts inspired by the festival. From making lanterns and dragon artwork to exploring Chinese symbols and animals from the zodiac, there was plenty to spark their creativity.

We also talked about how families celebrate together, share special meals and wish each other good luck for the year ahead. These conversations are a lovely way to introduce children to the idea that people around the world celebrate in different ways, helping to build early cultural awareness and understanding.

A Love of Stories on World Book Day

Next came one of our favourite celebrations of the year – World Book Day!

At Footsteps, books are at the heart of so much of what we do. Stories help children develop language, imagination and empathy, so having a day dedicated to books is always a highlight.

Children arrived dressed as their favourite characters, from brave superheroes to magical princesses and curious animals. Throughout the day we shared some of our favourite stories together, acted out scenes, explored small world set-ups, and encouraged the children to create their own imaginative tales.

From Hungry Caterpillars to Bear Hunt’s, It’s always wonderful to see the excitement when children recognise a character or proudly share their favourite book. A huge thanks to our amazing team as always for the incredible activities and not forgetting their own spectacular costume efforts too!

Learning Through National Days and Weeks

One of the ways we keep learning fresh and exciting at Footsteps is by taking inspiration from national awareness days and themed weeks throughout the year. These events give us fantastic opportunities to introduce new topics in fun and engaging ways.

For example just recently we have had:

Food Waste Action Week encourages conversations about looking after our planet. Children might explore sorting food, composting, or even using leftover ingredients in simple cooking activities. It’s a lovely introduction to sustainability and caring for the environment.

British Science Week sparks curiosity and discovery. The children might experiment with floating and sinking, explore magnets, mix colours or investigate how things grow. Science at Footsteps is all about asking questions, experimenting and having fun while learning.

Sometimes we simply enjoy celebrating something delightfully quirky, like British Pie Day! This might involve baking activities, sensory play with ingredients or even creating our own pretend bakery in the role-play area.

Why These Moments Matter

While these celebrations may seem like small moments, they play a big role in children’s development. They help children:

  • Explore different cultures and traditions
  • Develop language and storytelling skills
  • Build curiosity about the world
  • Express creativity through crafts and play
  • Strengthen social connections and confidence

By weaving these celebrations into everyday nursery life, we help children see that the world is full of interesting ideas, people and experiences waiting to be explored. And of course, we love sharing these moments with our wonderful families along the way!!

We are looking forward to celebrating the amazing women in our lives, with Mother’s Day just around the corner. We can’t wait to share what we get up to!
