Celebrating World Mental Health Day at Footsteps
At Footsteps, we believe that early experiences shape a child’s emotional and mental wellbeing, which is why we’re passionate about raising awareness of mental health – especially on World Mental Health Day on Thursday 10th October. This year, our nurseries and pre-schools came together in creative and age appropriate ways to encourage children to explore their feelings, nurture their emotional health, and support one another.
Here’s how just some of our locations celebrated this special day:
Watermead: Taking Part in #HelloYellow
At Watermead, we joined the #HelloYellow movement to shine a spotlight on mental health in children. Through a variety of activities, such as playdough sculpting, puppet play, and colouring sessions, the children had opportunities to check in on their feelings and express their emotions in a safe, fun environment. We also shared snack time together, creating a moment to talk about how we can support each other.
In addition, we encouraged donations to support Young Minds, a charity focused on children’s mental health, giving our families the chance to contribute to a cause that aligns with our mission.
Maple Cross: Happy Spa Day
At Maple Cross, we turned World Mental Health Day into a Spa Day! Children arrived dressed in clothes that make them feel happy—whether it was a favourite colour, comfy pyjamas, or a fun outfit that makes them smile. Throughout the day, the focus was on activities that promote relaxation and joy, giving our little ones time to focus on what makes them feel good inside and out. From cucumber masks to manicures and pedicures and even fruit kebabs with dipping chocolate too.
Oving: Calm and Relaxation
At Oving, we focused on promoting mental wellbeing through relaxation and self-care. The children were treated to a pampering session, allowing them to feel calm and relaxed. With the lights dimmed and soothing music playing, the atmosphere encouraged mindfulness. We also introduced yoga exercises, helping the children connect with their bodies, calm their minds, and relieve any stress they might be feeling.
Chalfont St Peter: Exploring Emotions with “Lucy’s Blue Hair Day” 📚
At Chalfont St Peter, we took a different approach by exploring emotions through storytelling. We read the book Lucy’s Blue Hair Day, a thoughtful story about a little girl who wakes up feeling sad without knowing why. This sparked meaningful discussions with the children about the different emotions we all experience, what makes us happy or sad, and how sometimes even adults, like mummies and daddies, have tough days. It was a gentle and engaging way to help children understand that it’s okay to not always feel okay.
We’re incredibly proud of how our children embraced World Mental Health Day, using thoughtful activities to help express their emotions and learn the importance of taking care of their mental health. We aim to continue this work throughout the year, creating a nurturing environment where every child feels supported, loved, and understood.
At Footsteps, wellbeing is not just for one day – it’s something we cultivate every day.
