May at Footsteps: Sunshine, fun time!

What a wonderful and busy month we’ve had at Footsteps! May has been packed with exciting adventures, special celebrations, and plenty of time exploring the great outdoors.

Forest School Fun
Our Forest School sessions have been full of hands-on learning this month. The children have been busy planting tomatoes and beans, carefully weeding our garden, and discovering the tiny creatures that live in the soil during bug hunts. We’ve also loved heading out on village walks, stopping by to visit the pigs and ducks – always a highlight for our little explorers!

Out and About in the Sunshine
With the lovely May sunshine making more regular appearances, we’ve spent lots of time outside balancing, playing tennis, riding on vehicles, and enjoying water play to cool off. We’ve also had a brilliant time with old-fashioned cardboard boxes – transforming them into cars, spaceships, and whatever else our imaginations could dream up!

Road Safety Week & People Who Help Us
As part of Road Safety Week, we talked about staying safe while out and about – looking at how to cross a road and what the different colour lights mean. We also had a very exciting visit from the local Fire Service. The children loved getting hands-on with the fire hose, trying on fire suits and learning all about how firefighters help us. We continued this theme throughout the month, discussing the many people who help us every day.

Celebrating Special National Days
We’ve marked several national and international days in May, each sparking fun and meaningful conversations and activities:

• VE Day was a poignant moment where we held a silence to remember the soldiers of WWII, followed by a delightful British-themed tea party.
• On World Bee Day, we buzzed with excitement learning about bees and their importance to our world.
• We thanked our amazing nurses on International Nurses Day, and raised awareness for Endangered Species Day, Mother Ocean Day, and National Train Day with stories, crafts, and songs.

Learning Through Play
Our children have explored colours, shapes, and numbers through a variety of playful and creative activities. We’ve also enjoyed singing songs about phonics, learning some Spanish, and even had some fun with farm animal themes. Our crafty side came out with messy play, potion-making, and plenty of themed artwork throughout the month.

Baking and Special Visitors
We’ve been busy in the kitchen baking delicious edible treats – from pizzas to scones our little chefs have been stirring, pouring, measuring, weighing, rolling, spreading and tasting. We also welcomed our wonderful mummies in to help the children make beautiful cards for Father’s Day – thank you for joining us and making it so special!

It’s been a truly joyful and jam-packed month at Footsteps. We’re so proud of all the children’s enthusiasm, creativity, and curiosity.  We can’t wait for more fun and learning after half term as we footstep into June!
