May-time, Play-time!

What a wonderful month May has been at Footsteps! The recent warm weather and sunshine have given us plenty of opportunities to take our learning outdoors and enjoy all the benefits that being outside can bring.

Learning About Road Safety
Keeping children safe is always a priority, and this month we have been focusing on road safety awareness through practical experiences and discussions.
The children have been learning how to stop, look, listen and think before crossing a road. In our outdoor play areas, we created simple road layouts where children could practise crossing safely, recognising traffic signs and understanding why it is important to pay attention to their surroundings.
During some of our local walks, we were also able to reinforce these important lessons in real-life situations. The children practised holding hands, walking sensibly near roads and identifying safe places to cross. These experiences help children build confidence and develop an understanding of how to stay safe when out and about with their families.

Inspired adventures!
Our Story Café sessions continue to be a wonderful way to develop a love of books and storytelling. The children have enjoyed sharing stories together, as well as welcoming some local authors to our settings. We were also delighted to host some very unusual visitors recently as we encountered some giant snails! The children were fascinated by observing them closely, learning about their habitats and discussing how they move and grow. Experiences like these help children develop confidence, curiosity and a greater understanding of the world around them.
We love to follow the children’s interests and use them as opportunities for learning. This month, animals and dinosaurs have been a particular favourite, with children enjoying stories, small world play, creative activities and discussions about different species. By building on their natural curiosity, we encourage language development, problem-solving and imaginative thinking whilst ensuring learning remains fun and engaging.

Outdoor Learning Every Day
As always, we have been making the most of our outdoor spaces. Whether exploring nature, developing physical skills, enjoying imaginative play or simply spending time in the fresh air, the children continue to thrive through our play-based approach to learning.

Making a Splash with Water Play
One of the highlights of the month has undoubtedly been our water play activities. The children have thoroughly enjoyed exploring water in lots of different ways, helping them stay cool whilst developing important skills through play.

From water trays filled with cups, jugs and funnels to pouring and measuring activities, the children have been investigating how water moves and flows. We have also enjoyed creating car washes in our outdoor areas and in tuff trays, where the children have been busy cleaning bikes, ride-on toys and toy vehicles. These activities encourage teamwork, communication and problem-solving.
Water play also supports early mathematical concepts such as capacity, volume and measurement, as well as helping to develop fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination.

Forest School Adventures
Our Forest School inspired sessions continue to be a firm favourite, giving children the opportunity to explore, discover and learn in a natural environment. Whether building dens, searching for mini beasts, balancing on logs or creating nature-inspired artwork, the children are developing resilience, independence and a deeper connection with the outdoors. This provides endless opportunities for children to take managed risks, solve problems and develop their confidence through hands-on experiences.

Growing in Our Allotments
The children have also been busy in our allotment and growing areas, helping to prepare and plant a variety of fruits, vegetables and flowers. They have enjoyed digging, planting, watering and caring for the young plants while learning about what living things need to grow. These activities help children develop patience and responsibility, whilst encouraging healthy eating and an appreciation of the natural world. We look forward to watching everything grow over the coming months and hopefully enjoying some delicious produce together later in the year.
The warmer weather has also given us opportunities to talk about staying safe in the sun. Children have been learning about wearing hats, drinking plenty of water and applying sun cream to help protect themselves while enjoying outdoor activities.

We are looking forward to seeing what June brings and continuing our adventures both indoors and outdoors.
