National Science Week at Footsteps
Footsteps, every day is filled with wonder and curiosity. This March, National Science Week was no exception as our budding scientists embarked on a journey of discovery, exploration, and hands-on learning. From colorful experiments to messy play, here’s a glimpse into the captivating activities that unfolded during this special week:
Another Day, Another Science Experiment!
We kicked off the week with an exciting experiment involving white flowers and colored water. The children poured water and food coloring into cups, then placed white flowers inside. After letting them soak all morning, we eagerly observed as the petals began to change color. The anticipation grew as we decided to leave them over the weekend for further observation.
Bubbling with Excitement
Next, it was time to dive into the world of bubbles! Armed with homemade bubble sticks crafted from pipe cleaners, the children ventured outside to create a bubbly spectacle. With bubbles blowing in the wind, laughter filled the air as they explored the science behind bubble formation.
Float or Sink: A Lesson in Buoyancy
In another experiment, we explored the concept of buoyancy by investigating what objects float and sink in water. The children made predictions before testing various items, showcasing their keen observational skills and scientific thinking.
Harnessing Static Electricity
Static electricity took center stage as we engaged in a captivating butterfly experiment. By rubbing balloons against our hair, we generated static to place against tissue paper butterflies to simulate butterfly wings fluttering. This hands-on activity sparked wonder and excitement as the children witnessed the power of static electricity in action.
Creating Rain Clouds on a Rainy Monday
With a creative twist, we simulated rainfall by crafting rain clouds using water, shaving foam, and blue food colouring. As the “clouds” released their colorful downpour, the children marveled at the science behind precipitation and weather phenomena.
Exploring Cause and Effect through Art
In a delightful fusion of science and creativity, we delved into cause and effect by painting with bicarb and vinegar. Witnessing the fizzy reactions and vibrant colour transformations, the children explored the fascinating world of chemical changes while honing their artistic skills.
Following the Weather’s Lead
Drawing inspiration from the weather, we embarked on experiments related to rainfall, fostering discussions on meteorology and the water cycle. Through hands-on activities, the children gained a deeper understanding of weather patterns and natural phenomena.
Frozen Easter Egg Painting and Messy Fun
Amidst the scientific exploration, we indulged in frozen Easter egg painting, infusing art with elements of temperature and texture. From mixing colors to making marks, the children reveled in the sensory experience, epitomizing the joy of messy play.
Eggcellent Science
In another captivating experiment, our curious minds gathered around a cup containing an egg and some vinegar. With each pour of vinegar, we embarked on a mission to unravel the mystery of shell dissolution, eagerly awaiting the transformation of our ordinary egg into a marvelously bouncy creation. As we observed and hypothesized, we excitedly waited for the moment when science would reveal its mesmerizing secrets before our very eyes.
Gloop Galore
The week concluded with a gooey adventure as we concocted gloop using cornflower, water, and food colouring. Immersed in sensory play, the children delighted in the squishy texture, unleashing their imagination and creativity.
As National Science Week came to a close, we celebrated the joy of discovery, and wonder. Through hands-on experiments, engaging activities, and playful exploration, our young scientists embarked on a journey of curiosity, sparking what we hope is a lifelong love for science and learning.
At Footsteps, the pursuit of knowledge is not just a lesson – it’s always an adventure waiting to unfold.
