Our Amazing Emergency Services
This month we have been looking at People Who Help Us. A very popular topic with so many creative
ways to explore the world around us, as well as the people in it. We take our children’s interests to help drive our planning, and this was a wonderful way to learn all about our amazing emergency services. Here at Footsteps Watermead, we have been taking every opportunity to utilise some fantastic learning resources to make this important topic come to life!
We started the week with the role of the police – and absolutely loved dressing up as policemen and women. We set up the Home Corner as a police station and enjoyed lots of role play. We did some themed colouring and arts and crafts and also enjoyed some small world play. We were proud of how beautifully the children listened as we talked about the important role of the police and how they keep us safe. This also led to our road safety sessions where we were able to talk about safety both in and out of the car.
We also talked about the fire service and our brave firefighters. We had such fun with our firefighter assault course, fire themed shaving foam messy play and putting out the chalk fires on the wall! We practised our fire drill and talked about who we would call if there was a real fire. Perhaps the most exciting event was being visited by a real fire engine. We were ever so fortunate to have a family member in the fire service arrange for a fire truck to come – much to the delight of all the children! They were incredible with the children, taking lots of time to show them the equipment – and the flashing lights and siren.
Floor Manager Karen added” Capturing our children’s imaginations in learning is so important to us, and we are sure that all the children learned lots about these important professions – as well as having lots of fun!”
