Road Safety Week at Footsteps: Learning through Fun and Creativity!
At Footsteps, we believe that early education goes beyond books and classrooms. During Road Safety Week, our nursery and pre-school children had a fantastic time learning all about staying safe on the roads – while having lots of fun along the way! Through a variety of activities, crafts, and hands-on learning, our children explored the importance of road safety in a way that was engaging, memorable, and enjoyable.
Colourful Crafts and Learning Traffic Lights
One of the first activities that our children got stuck into during Road Safety Week was crafting with the colours of traffic lights—red, amber, and green. Our little artists had a blast creating their own traffic light designs using colourful paints, paper, and stickers. This helped them learn the meaning behind each traffic light colour in a visual and interactive way.
In addition to making their own traffic lights, the children also explored how these signals help keep us safe on the roads. We discussed how red means “stop,” green means “go,” and amber means “wait.”
Tuff Tray Fun: Building Roads and Exploring Safety
Our sensory tuff tray setup was another big hit during Road Safety Week. We created a model road with miniature cars, traffic signs, and small vehicles, where the children could practice driving around the roads they had built themselves. This play allowed them to imagine what it would be like to be on the road. This hands-on activity helped reinforce road safety in a way that felt natural and exciting for the children.
Messy Play: Car Tracks in Paint
What’s more fun than making car tracks in paint? We engaged in messy play that allowed children to explore road safety through colour and creativity. They dipped toy cars into different colours of paint and then rolled them across large sheets of paper, creating their own “car tracks.” It was a fantastic way for encouraging the development of their fine motor skills. This also sparked discussions about the importance of driving carefully and how cars can leave tracks on the road.
Walking to the Shops: Practicing Safe Crossings
To take our road safety learning into the real world, we organised a walk to the local shops. This provided the perfect opportunity for the children to practice crossing roads safely. They were beautifully behaved as they learned how to look both ways, listen for traffic, and cross at pedestrian crossings with the guidance of an adult.
This real-life experience helped our children understand the importance of being alert and aware when near roads. It was a wonderful way to reinforce the lessons they had learned through play and crafts, giving them practical skills they can use every day.
Playing on Vehicles in the Garden: Thinking About How We Stay Safe
We continued the road safety theme by encouraging the children to play on the various vehicles in our outdoor garden. Whether riding tricycles, scooters, or toy cars, the children practiced turning, stopping, and even signaling as they moved around. We talked about the importance of wearing helmets, going at safe speeds, and taking turns—all important lessons for future road users. This active play helped our children develop balance, coordination, and confidence, while also reinforcing safe behaviours on the road.
At Footsteps, we know that we learn best through exploration and play, and this week was the perfect example of how we can make safety both engaging and educational. We’re proud of our children for their enthusiasm and the knowledge they’ve gained about how to stay safe on the roads.
We look forward to continuing to nurture their learning with fun, hands-on experiences that build essential life skills, all while making memories that will last a lifetime.
